  2. XLATOR V2.01    8/6/94 (Even better value at £5)

  5.   * Searches for German or French resource files (XLATOR_G.RSC and
  6.     XLATOR_F.RSC) if running on a German or French machine.
  7.     (If not found, the standard resource file is loaded)
  8.   * All utilities are now contained in one program.. XUTILS.PRG
  9.   * All have been completely re-written in 'C' and are much faster.
  10.   * A new utility function, 'Twist dictionary' has been added.
  11.     The twist function allows a dictionary to be reversed.
  12.     e.g. The German dictionary entry for 'wieder' is:

  14.          wieder    again/against/back/recurrence/render
  15.     
  16.     after twisting, it becomes:
  17.  
  18.          again     wieder
  19.          
  20.     All other translations for this word are saved in a separate
  21.     file called UPDATE.DIC. The UPDATE.DIC file can then be sorted
  22.     in exactly the same way as for an UNKNOWN.DIC file. After sorting
  23.     you can update the twisted dictionary with the other translation
  24.     words if required (see example).

  26. The dictionary updating routine has been substantialy altered to
  27. provide support for dictionary twisting. The changes are understood
  28. best by an example, so here goes:
  29.  
  30. OK, let's say you want to convert the German to English dictionary
  31. into an English to German dictionary.
  32.  
  33. (1) Select 'Twist dictionary' from menu, select GER_ENG.DIC as the
  34.     source file then have a coffee while you're waiting. When it's
  35.     finished, save the output file as say TWISTED.DIC (Ouch!).
  36. (2) Select 'Process UNKNOWN.DIC' from menu and choose UPDATE.DIC as
  37.     the source file. This will take just a few seconds to sort.
  38. (3) Select 'Update dictionary' from menu, choosing TWISTED.DIC as
  39.     the dictionary and then UPDATE.DIC as the update file. When done
  40.     the fileselector appears again and this time enter the proper
  41.     name for the dictionary, ENG_GER.DIC. The program will now start
  42.     a second pass on the new dictionary. Pass 2 re-formats the file
  43.     such that multiple entries appear on a single line.
  44.  
  45.     e.g. for the English word 'assign', after steps 1,2 & 3 above:

  47.     The TWISTED.DIC file will contain
  48.  
  49.         assign    uberweisen
  50.  
  51.     The UPDATE.DIC file will contain
  52.  
  53.         assign    berufen
  54.         assign    zuteilen
  55.         assign    zuweisen
  56.  
  57.     And ENG_GER.DIC file will contain (this is done during pass 2)

  59.         assign    berufen/uberweisen/zuteilen/zuweisen

  61. Note that the German words after 'assign' are in alphabetical order.

  63. Don't be too alarmed if the final twisted dictionary is much smaller
  64. than the original. The reason is that many translations which would
  65. be unsuitable are automatically deleted. For example many translations
  66. are of the form:
  67.  
  68.         bildschirmgradationen    grey_scale_monitor
  69.         angeboten    offer_to(?)
  70.  
  71. The above translations would be deleted since they make no sense when
  72. switched round. No one writes English in this way. Also, any validity
  73. characters present in the original dictionary will be deleted from the
  74. twisted dictionary.

  76. I apologise if it all seems complicated, but I wanted to be able to
  77. create a minimal dictionary with only one translation. This can be
  78. done by performing only step 1 above and ignoring steps 2 and 3. I'm
  79. always open to suggestions, so don't hesitate to drop me a line if
  80. you have any ideas (or money) you would like to share with me.

  93.   * Source files can now be dropped on the XLATOR icon on the
  94.     desktop (TOS >= 2.xx). You need only then select the language

  99. going to bother changing it. Will work on the utilities instead.

  110. of convergence, if I can find a way to implement Reguli Falsi,

  115. After you've sorted you're UNKNOWN.DIC file (see below), you may
  116. run this utility to guess at words which were not found in the
  117. dictionary. It produces a file called GUESSED.DIC with some
  118. possible translations for you to try. 
  119. Be warned, the program is written in BASIC and is very slow.

  152. XLATOR  is a universal language translation program.  It  is  not 
  153. clever,  just  a word for word translator,  examining a file  and 
  154. translating  words  which have an entry in  the  dictionary.  The 
  155. translated  text  will be completely out of context but  still  a 
  156. whole lot easier to understand than a foreign language.
  157.  
  158. As of 8/6/93 there is only one dictionary available, GER_ENG.DIC, 
  159. the German to English dictionary.  If the program proves  popular 
  160. and people send me new dictionaries,  they will be rewarded  with 
  161. regular updates to the software.

  163. The  German  language has a tendency to combine several words  to 
  164. make a single word.  For example:
  165.

  168. This  causes  problems for a word  for  word  translator.  Future 
  169. versions  of  the program may address  these  problems.  I  would 
  170. therefore be grateful to anyone who knows a bit about the  German 
  171. language, contacting me and helping out with this.

  174. When  you  run the program you will see that two options  in  the 
  175. 'FILE  TYPE' menu are disabled.  These are intended for a  future 
  176. version of XLATOR.

  179. MultiTOS (or any other multitasking OS)
  180.  
  181. If  you  run the program in MultiTOS mode,  the first  thing  you 
  182. notice is that it is incredibly slow. This is because the program 
  183. is continually checking for GEM events while it is translating. 
  184. It  does have the advantage that you can move the  window  around 
  185. the screen and the window is redrawn if it becomes  obscured.  It 
  186. is  not necessary to switch to MultiTOS mode when  running  under 
  187. MultiTOS, if you don't, it just means the program will ignore all 
  188. window events while it is translating and will run much quicker.

  190. SUBSTITUTE
  191.  
  192. The  SUBSTITUTE menu allows you to specify the number of words to
  193. insert,   in  place  of  the  foreign  word.  For  example,   the
  194. translation of the word 'wieder' shown below, has five equivalent
  195. english  words.  If  SUBSTITUTE  is  set  to  1, only  the  first
  196. translation  word  will be inserted, if set at 2, the  first  two
  197. words are inserted etc..

  199. Dictionaries
  200.  
  201. XLATOR  dictionaries  are  plain ASCII  files  in  the  following 
  202. format:
  203.  
  204. XLAT           This  is always on line 1,  it identifies a  valid 
  205.                dictionary  file.  Nothing else should be on  this 
  206.                line.
  207.  
  208. Line  2  contains  'validity  characters'  these  are  alphabetic 
  209. characters  which  are valid for the  particular  language  being 
  210. translated.  For  example the German language has  the  following 
  211. validity characters on this line:

  215. From line 3 to the end of the file, are the translation words.

  222. NOTE: The tab MUST be a tab, not a space.

  224. It  is  recommended  that  dictionaries  are  updated  using  the 
  225. UPDT_DIC.PRG utility and not by hand.

  228. Utility programs
  229.  
  230. A few utilities are supplied with the main program,  they may one 
  231. day be a part of it.
  232.  
  233. UNKN_SRT.PRG
  234.      When a file is translated,  an additional file is created on 
  235.      disk  called UNKNOWN.DIC,  this file contains all the  words 
  236.      the program was unable to translate,  because they were  not 
  237.      in  the  dictionary.  Use this utility to  remove  duplicate 
  238.      entries  in this file,  and sort the file into  alphabetical 
  239.      order.  You  can then go though the file,  armed  with  your 
  240.      pocket  dictionary,  find  suitable translations  for  these 
  241.      words  and add them to UNKNOWN.DIC.  Delete words which  you 
  242.      cannot  find a translation for.  The file should be  in  the 
  243.      same  format as the dictionary,  except you should  have  no 
  244.      special entries for lines 1 and 2.

  246. UPDT_DIC.PRG
  247.      When  you  have sorted your UNKNOWN.DIC file and  added  new 
  248.      translations,  this utility is used to update the dictionary 
  249.      with the new words, making sure they are sorted correctly.
  250.      The program does not check to see if the word is already  in 
  251.      the dictionary,  since it assumes it is being updated by the 
  252.      UNKNOWN.DIC file.  You can use it to merge two  dictionaries 
  253.      together,  but  you  must run the DIC_SORT  program  on  the 
  254.      output file, to remove identical lines.

  256. DIC_SORT.PRG
  257.      This utility is used to process a new word list and turn  it 
  258.      into  a  dictionary.  The  file  is  sorted  alphabetically, 
  259.      duplicate entries are removed and blank lines are deleted.
  260.      You must run this program on an merged dictionary!
  261.  
  262. N.B.
  263. The utilities are written in GFA BASIC and therefore may not work 
  264. under  MultiTOS.  XLATOR itself is written in Lattice C 5.6  and 
  265. should have no problems with compatibility.
